The short answer
Delayed-onset muscle soreness — the stiffness that peaks a day or two after a hard or unfamiliar session — responds to both heat and cold. A meta-analysis of 32 randomised trials found that either, applied within about an hour of exercise, may reduce how sore you feel the next day. A separate network meta-analysis ranked hot packs highest for easing soreness in the first twenty-four hours.
So the honest answer is not "heat versus ice" but "which one, when".

Why warmth helps
Heat widens blood vessels and increases local blood flow, which can support the muscle's own recovery processes. It also relaxes tissue, which may reduce that guarded, tight feeling that follows hard training. These are short-term comfort effects — useful, honest, and repeatable — not a shortcut around progressive training.
What neither will do
Neither heat nor ice speeds up strength gains, and neither is required for adaptation. They are comfort and recovery-support tools. If soreness is sharp, swollen, one-sided, or lasts beyond about four days, that is not normal DOMS — have it assessed.
